The YMCA is an international Movement. Using our international links we build a more equitable, tolerant, and peaceful world for tomorrow.  YMCAs in Australia support fellow Nations in times of crisis, and through sponsoring ongoing programs in developing countries. Below are some examples of the YMCA's international Mission in action.

Vietnam - Vocational Training

80 million people live in Vietnam and less than 50 per cent of those people have a job.

In response to the high unemployment rate, the YMCA of Vietnam established the Hope Vocational Training school in Ho Chi Minh City.  The center provides vocational training, fosters entrepreneurship and secures employment for students.  Courses run for six months and students, 70 in each course, choose from electronics, refrigeration and motorcycle repair.  Most students are from poor rural communities and many struggle to pay for food and accommodation.

YMCAs across Australia fund students of the vocational training school.  Funding provides students with course materials, tuition, meals, accommodation expenses and a set of tools for each graduate.

Sri Lanka - Leadership Training

As Sri Lanka continued the process of rebuilding after the devastating 2004 tsunami, it was identified that opportunities for young people to mentor other young people were lacking. The re-development of a camping program was identified as a great way for this to happen.

One staff member and one volunteer from the Victorian YMCA flew across to Sri Lanka to provide a week-long intensive training course in camps leadership, for 25 young volunteers from the Sri Lankan YMCA.

It is hoped that this training will lead to a continuing relationship between the two YMCA Movements, with leadership exchanges, information sharing and regular follow-up.
